Reflection | Isaiah 53:5 | 13 October 2021

A letter from Anthony...

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:5

No one likes to be blamed for something they didn’t do, or accused of something they are not guilty of, but that is exactly what the Lord Jesus did for us.

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

When we think about what Jesus willingly endured in going to the cross for each of us, it seems unfair that Jesus was punished for every wrong thought and deed that we have ever done, or ever will do.

But that is how great God’s love is for those who trust in Him.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1a

Through the incredible love of God we, who were once enemies of God, have been adopted and brought into His Kingdom through the astonishing love that we were shown on the cross.

Every time we have lost our temper, every time we have had an ungodly thought, every time we have committed an ungodly deed or failed to love God or our neighbour more than ourselves, Jesus paid for all these sins when He willingly laid down His life for us.

If He who had no sin was crushed for our sin, if by His wounds we are healed, if we have received such amazing and underserved forgiveness through our Lord Jesus Christ, then may we show our thankfulness for what He has done for us in the way we serve Him and love others.

As we forgive those who have sinned against us, and encourage those who are struggling, “let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…” Hebrews 10:24

May our lives display the love we have received from the One who brought us peace, by taking the punishment that we deserve on Himself.

In Christ, Anthony
